Trick-or-Treat but be Safe!

Halloween is one of the busiest nights on the streets — kids darting across driveways, cyclists weaving in neighbourhoods, drivers navigating dark costumes and flashing lights.  It’s also a time when visibility is low, distractions are high, and the risk of pedestrian or cyclist collisions increases.  Being safe, visible and informed helps everyone.

For pedestrians & kids

• Wear reflective or light-coloured costumes so drivers can spot you.
• Use sidewalks and cross only at designated crosswalks; look both ways.
• Make eye contact with drivers when crossing, especially in low light.
• Carry a flashlight or glow-stick to boost visibility.
• Stay off the road while walking; avoid darting between parked cars.

For cyclists (or teens riding bikes/e-bikes)

• Use proper lights (front and back) and wear reflective gear.
• Ride predictably: signal, stay in your lane, and watch for turning vehicles.
• Slow down at intersections—most cycling collisions occur there.
• Avoid riding on sidewalks (unless local bylaw permits) and obey traffic rules.

For drivers

• Drive slowly in neighbourhoods — Halloween has high pedestrian activity.
• Expect surprises: children in costumes may cross unexpectedly.
• Turn off music, keep distractions down, and keep an extra-vigilant eye on sidewalks and driveways.
• When turning, check for cyclists and pedestrians — especially at dusk when visibility is poorer.

In the event of a crash: what to do

• If you’re injured, call 911 if needed.
• Gather details: name of driver, licence plate, vehicle make/model, location of crash.  ICBC emphasizes gathering this for cyclists/pedestrians. 
• Report the crash to ICBC as soon as possible.
• Seek medical care for any injury — benefits are available for treatment.
• If you were on foot or a bike, remember you still may be eligible for benefits even if you did not own a vehicle.
